Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of common questions. If your question is not answered here, please get in touch.

1. What is a McKenzie Friend?

A McKenzie Friend is someone who supports a person representing themselves in court by offering quiet advice, taking notes, and helping with documents—but they are not a lawyer and cannot speak on your behalf unless the judge allows it. Professional McKenzie Friends, such as here at McKenzie Matters, can offer support, advice and services throughout the length of your case.

2. How much does a McKenzie Friend charge?

Every case is unique, so costs depend on the type and amount of work involved. For details of our fees, visit our Fees page—but you’ll see McKenzie Friends are usually much more affordable than family solicitors.

3. Are McKenzie Friends legally qualified?

Not necessarily. Some may have legal knowledge or experience, but they are not required to be qualified lawyers.

4. Can a McKenzie Friend speak for me in court?

Not unless the judge gives specific permission. Usually, you must speak for yourself, but a McKenzie Friend can help you prior to any hearing, helping you structure your case and reassure you when feeling nervous.

5. What kind of cases can a McKenzie Friend help with?

Commonly family law cases (e.g., child arrangements, divorce), but they can also assist in civil and tribunal matters.

6. Can I use a McKenzie Friend instead of a solicitor or barrister?

Yes. If you're self-representing, a McKenzie Friend can be a cost-effective alternative to full legal representation.

7. Do I need the court’s permission to bring a McKenzie Friend?

No, but you should inform the court in advance. The judge can refuse if they believe it’s not in the interests of justice, however this is extremely rare.

8. Is everything I share with a McKenzie Friend confidential?

Professional McKenzie Friends maintain confidentiality, but they’re not bound by legal privilege like solicitors. However, information would not be shared without consent. For further information, please see our Privacy Policy.

9. Do you assist in cases for both applicants and respondents?

Yes. Assistance is given to clients, regardless of whether they have applied for, or are responding to a case.

10. What if I need advice regarding an ongoing criminal investigation, whilst going through a family court case?

While McKenzie Matters does not provide legal advice on criminal cases, our founder has extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system, including police and CPS investigative protocols. We recommend consulting a criminal lawyer for any police investigation, but we can help you understand how it may affect your family court case.
